New York, 1989. Filmmaker Jennie Livingston documented the underground ballroom scene of Paris Is Burning. A fashion show and club circuit of fashion, Paris was a family for gay kids, for trans kids and all those thrown from their homes for being too much themselves. In the shadow of AIDS and extreme prejudice, Paris Is Burning gave birth to glamour and fierceness, nurtured dreams and aspirations, and taught its lost children to walk, to vogue and to be real.
CINEMQ honors Paris is Burning with a special cinema event @ Factory 54. Featuring reedited scenes from the movie, and short films from around the world about people who strive to be truly themselves, no matter if the world tells them they can’t. Expect butch queens, femme realness and no end of SHADE.
Featuring DJ set by the fabulous Cignarale, and Roland Lauth.
CINEMQ is a monthly underground queer film experience, in association with ShanghaiPRIDE Film Festival.
