ShPTF – IBSEN INTERNATIONAL: Disco-Teca
As the closing performance in 2016 ShanghaiPRIDE Theatre Festival, Disco-Teca is commissioned by Ibsen International and produced by ErGao Dance company.
1979. After leaving behind the decade of chaos and idolatry of the Cultural Revolution, China opens its doors to the world. A fresh breeze sweeps the country from the south. Through a triangular route via colonial Hong Kong, disco music bursts in. A hurricane of synthesizers, lascivious moves, bright lipsticks and wild hairdos storms the Popular Republic. After decades of uniformity and rule of the collective self, the germs of difference and individualism reappear in the ballrooms, floating along with the skirts, reflected in the disco balls.
Beyond fashion trends and at the edge of the dance floors, a new room for self-reflection opens up. Social statuses, sense of belonging, gender identity are all mixed up at the cloakroom, and the disco music’s BPMs set the body into action/reflection. “Who am I?” “What am I doing here?” “What am I looking for?” A container of different shapes and nature, difficult to define, an incubator for new trend, Disco is waiting for you.
The core concept is the appearance of disco music in the 1980s, when China opens its doors to the world. A fresh breeze sweeps the country from the south; through a triangular route via colonial Hong Kong, disco music bursts in. A hurricane of synthesizers, lascivious moves, and wild hairdos storms the Popular Republic. The Pandora’s Box of sexuality, gender, body, and pleasure in Disco music was opened. Like disco culture the project transforms, becoming a multidisciplinary investigation that combine performance with academic research. The common research points: how are cultures globalised/localised in the process of cultural fusion? What is preserved, transformed, and written off? How are music, body, dance, gender performance, and gender identity knitted into a sophisticated relationship?
