ShanghaiPRIDE Film Festival 2017
The Time is Now 酷影相随
Many said that life is like a movie, it is a form of language that showcases reality and touches souls. Every year during ShanghaiPRIDE Film Festival (ShPFF), we want to present diversity, and through these queer films, we not only share them with the community, we hope to reach out to more of the general public.
ShPFF, part of ShanghaiPRIDE, started in 2009 and was re-launched in 2015, continues to support new Chinese filmmakers and bringing the cutting edge of international queer cinema to Shanghai.
This year, ShPFF will screen the selected films on 11-June and 18-June as a two-full-day queer films marathon. Almost 40 films have been selected from 12 countries/locations all over the world. Some of the winning films of Berlin International Film Festival Teddy Award and BFI Flare London LGBT Film Festival will also have their premiere in Mainland China at ShPFF.
Forty films were submitted to the ShPFF Chinese Short Film Competition, and in the run for five awards, including Best Film, Best Screenplay, Best Cinematography, Best Editing, and Best Sound & Music. The juries were very impressed by the diversity and quality of the short films. Winners and nominees of the awards will be screened at ShPFF.
Top highlights among the international queer films include opening film Small Talk (TW), Teddy Award 2017 winner, where a daughter goes to great lengths attempting to understand her mother; The Trans List (US), explores the range of experiences lived by people who identify as transgender; Teddy Award 2017 Best Short Film, My Gay Sister (SE), tells a story about a young girl first meeting with the expectations to define her sexuality; #FiveFilms4Freedom, collaboration of the British Council and British Film Institute; Iris Prize nominee of Roze Filmdagen Amsterdam LGBTQ Film Festival, TommyTeen18, bridging the void between childhood and maturity; and India’s first silent LGBTQ film, Sisak, story of two gay men who meet and fall in love in regular train journeys.
Film screenings will follow with panel discussions with guest speakers to discuss about development of queer films and the local community.
