Chinese Theatre Opens for RSVP

Is there anything in the world
that you are proud of?
We believe everyone has something,
whether or not you are aware of its existence.
Some people enjoy the glamor
under the spotlight;
others raise a glass to
the lonesome joy of solitude.
Every single one of them is a treasure.

There’s an iconic quote from the movie X-Men
“Mutant and Proud”
People see mutants as monsters
but mutants
they are “mutant and proud”

From a broader point of view, it can be “Minority and Proud.” The world never lacks in such stories, even outside the cinema. When someone becomes a so-called “minority” due to various innate or acquired characteristics, they can be detested as monsters merely because of being a “minority, ” despite the fact that we can’t even name what exactly about that person is “odd” or “abhorrent.” Indeed, we live in an era of progress;  society continues to develop; and we can see how the world is becoming increasingly tolerant. We created this project to have a pleasant conversation. The entire play doesn’t really have any spectacular or intense scenes; it’s just some young people sitting there, “having pleasant conversation.” For one thing, we want to talk to ourselves.

This play is the second play related to this topic
after “This Love” by director Sky Lu,
who keeps iterating the quote,
“You deserve what you get.”,
who pities the unfortunates,
and who despises the dispirited.

Therefore, we want to discuss with our audiences

that whether we, the minorities,
take pride in our identities—or better yet,
do we take the pride granted by the fact that
we were born equal as humans?
Have we thought about fighting for “equality?”
What exactly are we fighting for?
And how are we going to do that?

For another, we want to present the reality to our audiences, hoping to trade our truthful hearts for theirs—that may sound a little silly, but we do wish to hear the voice from the public, be it positive, negative, encouraging, critical… Just don’t disparage or overpraise it. We just want to sit down, and have a calm conversation to clear the table.
There’s no standard answer to these questions and discussions, but we believe that something valuable will eventually emerge from these rational voices.

“like, the truth does not fear contention?”
“Yes, the truth does not fear contention.”
There’s a long way to The Rainbow. We wish to be there with you.

Synopsis

This is a story about four young men in a fairly conservative small city. Their pride gathered them together for a festival of their own. As the day approaches, they start to find that the difficulties are everywhere. Everyone is eager for the equality and liberty, and yet they also suffer from many varieties of yokes. There’s still a long way to The Rainbow. Would they keep going on?
