Inaugural TransPride Shanghai
TransPride Shanghai 2018
TransPride Shanghai is a collaboration between Trans Talks and ShanghaiPRIDE. TransPride Shanghai aims to help create a safe and fun environment by providing information, resources, education, and social events for the local trans community and allies. TransPride events have been wildly successful in cities around the world, and we are bringing them to Shanghai!
For a long time, China has used the term “transgender” (跨性别 kua xing bie) to represent all trans identities. We believe that using the word “跨儿” (kua er) for “trans” can increase inclusivity and awareness of gender diversity within China’s trans movement. Guangzhou’s well-known Trans Center has even changed their Chinese name to 跨儿中心 (kua er zhong xin), in line with Shanghai’s Trans Talks (跨儿说 kua er shuo) in order to advocate for the use of the term “跨儿” (kua er).
Transgender: One whose gender identity differs from their sex assigned at birth.
Trans: One whose gender identity and/or gender expression may differ from their sex assigned at birth, or who does not conform to normative gender roles. Trans is inclusive of individuals who challenge the socially constructed gender binary, including but not limited to transgender, genderqueer, gender non-conforming, intersex, and persons with non-conforming gender expressions.
Gender expression: includes various ways one chooses to express or perform their gender identity and other aspects of themselves (body, clothing, language, behavior, attitude etc.)
