03 ShanghaiPRIDE Theatre Festival VI

Yesterday, Happiness42 hosted the script reading of screenwriter Zhang Jia’an’s “I am Nezha”.

“I am Nezha” starts from individual experiences and uses a monologue format to portray queer stories from Chinese people around the world. Topics include healing, love, the meaning of love, and who we are.

10 performers, 9 scenes from LGBTQ lives, a small art space transformed. Trembling, hesitating, we make our way down a thorny path, each line from the play a testament to a life lived. We are all Nezha.

Not only because they were moved, but because they could truly empathize with one another, the enraptured audience broke into thunderous applause.

This play proved the importance of proudly standing up and speaking out in a time where we’re often deliberately hidden from the society.

We’d like to thank Happiness42 for providing the venue.

05 ShanghaiPRIDE Red Dragon Party

At the closing bash for the tenth annual ShanghaiPRIDE on June 16, RIINK proved to be the perfect venue for a joyful, high-energy, passionate celebration.

Partygoers showed up in high spirits, ready to leap into the last night of Pride revelry, as well as to commemorate the annual Dragon Boat Festival.

As we reviewed the memorable activities of the past week, the surprise appearance of three co-founders of ShanghaiPRIDE (nine years after the very first Pride festival) elicited massive cheers from the audience.

The fusion of Chinese elements with Pride culture manifested in a series of colorful drag shows.

Singer Denise Minnifeld and DJ BO & friends dialed up the atmosphere with their tunes, as the crowd went wild. Applause, whistles and cheers filled the venue.

To celebrate the Dragon Boat holiday, a special troupe of lion and dragon dancers took the stage, followed by a Chinoise-inflected drag show. The audience roared its approval at the unexpected treat.

We would like to express our appreciation to Taihu Brewing and RIINK for support for our closing bash. With both rainbows and dragons unleashed, the 2018 edition of ShanghaiPRIDE comes to a close.
