LGBTQ History Forum | Explore Queerness in History

Did you know that Chinese Emperor Ai had a gay lover 2,000 years ago?
Did you know that there are hundreds of ancient African languages that contain phrases that refer to LGBTQ identities?
Did you know that the vast majority of anti-homosexuality laws around the world originated in a 19th century British empire law?
Did you know that aboriginal people in North America and Australia have played a key role in preserving pre-colonial queer identities?

Guest Introduction

Lucetta Kam is currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Humanities and Creative Writing at Hong Kong Baptist University. Her research interests are queer mobility of Chinese women, Chinese gender and sexuality studies, and queer popular culture in East Asia. She is the author of Shanghai Lalas: Female Tongzhi Communities and Politics in Urban China (2013; Chinese edition 2015).

Lee Ji Young* is a high school history teacher and an advocate for the transgender community. Lee’s long term goal is to create an LGBTQ+ historical encyclopedia that will debunk political justifications to deny LGBTQ+ legislative protections on the basis of queerness being ‘foreign’ to their country. Lee believes that this will validate queer people as an integral part of their national histories.
