ShanghaiPRIDE Is Back to Share the Pride
As the LGBTQ community gains strides throughout the world, it’s more important than ever to share a message of love, acceptance and diversity far and wide. That’s the aim of ShanghaiPRIDE as the festival returns for its 11th year with a new theme: 同享彩虹 Share the Pride. As mainland China’s largest and longest-running Pride festival, the volunteer-run organization will Share the Pride on June 8-16, 2019 with a week of art, film, discussions, parties and community-building, all aimed at celebrating the diversity and strength of the LGBTQ community.
The festivities begin pre-Pride with one of ShanghaiPRIDE’s most beloved annual traditions: the Rainbow Bike Ride, which will be held on Saturday, May 18 to commemorate International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia (IDAHOT). Cyclers ride from six different points throughout the city, one for each color of the LGBTQ rainbow, and then meet in the middle to create a colorful display of unity.
Pride11 then officially kicks off on Saturday, June 8 with the opening night of the Pride Art exhibition. Expect a showcase of photography and paintings that explore the meaning of “pride” in all its varied forms. The exhibit will be on display from June 8-23.
Saturday, June 8 also sees the opening of ShanghaiPRIDE Film Festival, which runs daily at venues throughout the city from June 8-16. One of the highlights of ShanghaiPRIDE every year, the film festival showcases some of the finest works of cinema exploring LGBTQ topics from around China, Asia and the world. ShPFF also provides a platform for emerging Chinese filmmakers with its Chinese Short Film competition.
ShanghaiPRIDE’s Out & Equal China Forum will be held on Thursday, June 13, with presentations from a variety of companies on equality in the workplace. Also on Thursday is ShanghaiPRIDE’s annual ladies party, a celebration for the city’s queer women complete with raffles and sizzling live performances.
Saturday, June 15 kicks off with the Pride Run in the morning, followed by the annual Pink Brunch, an outdoor BBQ buffet and afternoon party. This exciting day culminates that evening with the Pink Party, ShanghaiPRIDE’s biggest celebration. Come decked out in your best pink ensemble and expect a jubilant dance party chock full of live performances, raffle prizes, and tons of Pride.
ShanghaiPRIDE wraps up on Sunday, June 16 with some of its most important events, including Pride Talk. Hear directly from Shanghai’s LGBTQ community as individuals share their personal stories about life under the rainbow. Also on Sunday is the LGBTQ Groups Open Day, an opportunity to explore the community groups that support LGBTQ individuals throughout China, and the Rainbow Media Awards to honor the press institutions that cover LGBTQ subjects. Pride11 will also host three forums throughout the day that shed light on important topics for the community: Rainbow Families, LGBTQ History, and Gender Minorities.
ShanghaiPRIDE is an entirely volunteer-run festival. This year’s sponsors include Andaz Xintiandi, Shanghai, Bayer, Converse, Cotton’s, Nike+ Run Club, Old Navy and Wunderman.
