Stonewall 1969: the next stop on STB’s “virtual taste” tour
How a police riot led to the birth of the gay rights movement…
It is the epic moments in history that bring about revelation, realization, and renewal…recent global phenomena, from virus times of a pandemic to protests across the globe, we are living in historic times. STB wants to go back, wants to revisit, a special place, for a special moment in time…in honor of Pride, we head to Stonewall Inn, Greenwich Village…
It was here, that a police raid led to the birth of the gay rights movement. Come with us Shanghai-ren, join us as we continue on our “virtual” taste tour, and this next stop, we step back in time and surround ourselves in visiting another epic moment in history: the Stonewall Riots of 1969.
The riots broke out on the morning of June 28, 1969, after police raided the Stonewall Inn in Greenwich Village. Police raids on LGBTQ friendly bars were increasing in the US at the time and an early morning raid on the Stonewall Inn sparked a fightback in the community that sparked widespread rioting.
Drag queens, transgender people, gay men, and lesbians as well as homeless youths were guests at the bar, which was owned by the Mafia. When the Stonewall Inn was raided it attracted a crowd of people who began rioting as tensions between the people of the liberal Greenwich Village and police escalated.
Six months after the Stonewall riots, two gay organizations were formed in NYC – and despite the city’s prejudices – worked to gain legal recognition. Just a few years later, LGBTQ organizations were established across the world and the first Gay Pride took place in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Chicago on that same day as the Stonewall riot that sparked the entire gay rights movement – June 28th.
The Stonewall riots were a flashpoint in LGBTQ history: After the riots, the LGBTQ civil rights movement went from handfuls of pioneering activists to a national movement mobilizing thousands.
