Recap | Special Screening: Nordic Day!
Despite the delay of the ShanghaiPRIDE Film Festival, ShanghaiPRIDE prepared a special screening for fans of queer short film!
On June 20, ShPFF Nordic Day was successfully held at the Royal Danish Consulate General in Shanghai.
The screening began with three Danish films: “Odd Job Man”, “Project Baby” and “Cognitio”, respectively portraying the awakening of an older drag queen, the intriguing dynamics of LGBTQ families with their children, and the consciousness of a teenage gay boy. Up next was the Norwegian film “Fanny”, depicting the heroine’s difficulties with socialization and self-discovery as an LGBTQ individual, and “Wild Beasts”.
After the intermission came the Swedish film “No More We,” a short film focusing on the inner struggle of a gay couple, “Thrust”, a documentary about feminist dance group Juck, and short film “Sleepover.” From Finland, the audience got to enjoy “A Poly Love Story”, a remarkable modern dance performance about polyamory, and short film “The Image of You.”
Between screenings, three models from ShanghaiPRIDE’s official Pride12 campaign visuals, shared with the audience their experience with ShanghaiPRIDE 2020.
The last screening was “Shanghai Queer,” a documentary about LGBTQ communities in Shanghai spanning several decades. It details the collective advancement of LGBTQ communities in Shanghai and in the nation as a whole throughout the last 15 years. From Private Line Services to the burgeoning of internet media, from having to conceal one’s true self to this year’s Pride12 theme of “Raise the Pride,” the film crew explored the experiences and stories behind the many LGBTQ groups in Shanghai.
After the screening, Ann Yu, the producer of “Shanghai Queer,” shared the obstacles the team faced in the production process and their reflections about the film. During the Q&A session, Ann Yu said that they consider their work an objective record of the collective memory of the LGBTQ community, and that they hope people can be motivated by the past to move toward a brighter future.
There wasn’t an empty seat in the house as everyone enjoyed the authentic Nordic movies and refreshments!
ShanghaiPRIDE would like to thank our partners, sponsors, the LGBTQ community, and everyone who participated in the ShPFF Special Screening this year, especially the Consulates of Denmark, Finland, Norway, and Sweden in Shanghai!
