Recap | Achievements of Rainbow Marriage Advocacy
ShanghaiPRIDE 2020 Forum series wrapped up on June 13 with the ever-popular discussion topic of Rainbow Marriage at Bridge+.
We heard from the community, advocates, and academics about the challenges and achievements of rainbow marriage advocacy.
The forum kicked off with a video from the Australia Say Yes campaign, followed by a live-streaming interview with the organizer, Anna Brown. Anna shared with us the journey of the campaign and its future plans.
Next, Professor Wei Wei from East China Normal University’s School of Sociology presented his survey report on 35 same-sex couples in China. He hopes that such sociological studies can improve the overall attitude towards the idea of same-sex marriage.
Congwei Liu, representing the Rainbow Legal Center, presented investigative research on current legislations, highlighting that including same-sex marriage in policies is important and necessary for the community.
On a more personal note, Kele from Xiamen shared the strenuous journey she and her wife have been through together as a couple, from being maliciously attacked online to being celebrated and respected today. She feels that the general public’s acceptance of LGBTQ people is slowly improving.
Xiaoying Dong from the Advocates for Diverse Families Network shared some insights about supporting the community through legislation. She emphasized that individual efforts encourage more conversations, letting our voices be heard by the general public.
Last but not the least, Gao Mingyue, a lawyer with extensive professional experience, shed some light on marriage laws. He mentioned that helping everyone understand the community better will help impact any future changes.
ShanghaiPRIDE would like to thank our partners, sponsors, the LGBTQ community, and everyone who participated in the Rainbow Marriage Forum this year, including the Australian Consulate General in Shanghai and Microsoft!
