Pride Art | Meet Our Artists (Cont.)

Pride Art will return this August! Before saying goodbye to this lovely summer, let’s wait and see the artistic thinking spark creativity!

Pride Art is an inclusive platform for LGBTQ and allies artists to showcase their works. Pride Art 2020 “Perspectives: from the community and allies,” is not only a collective statement of the LGBTQ community, allies, and supporters, but also an expression of their acknowledgment and point of view of self, relationships, objects of different kinds, and conception of the world.

Let’s meet some of the emerging artists that will showcase their works at Pride Art.

Wang Hua

Hua was born in Xinjiang Autonomous Region, China, and lives and works in China and Europe. She studied Fine Arts for her BA at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design, London in 2012. She completed her MA in Ceramics and Glass at Royal College of Art in 2018. Wang Hua’s experimental practice can be seen as a ceramics testing ground as well as a conceptual laboratory that investigates on diverse personal, social and political themes. Part of a generation of Chinese artists who grew up during a period of rapid urbanisation, she said “Gender, hierarchy, there is often more to this matter than meets the eye. I try to pay attention when unjustified incidents happen.”

Using a range of different types of clay and methods of making on philosophical ideas such as the increasing materialism and obsolescence of our society, Hua employs drawing, painting, sculpture and video to echo conditions where family stories and social events are inextricably interwoven into an autobiographical structure.

Cao Xue

Cao Xue, born in 1992, graduated from University of the Arts London, Chelsea College of Arts, and is now a freelance illustrator.

Diana Schweinert
(aka Michelle de Mâtisse)

Michelle de Mâtisse, born in south Germany, started drawing from early childhood. Later on, she got excited about experimenting with acrylic colors and different media. After graduating in Graphic Design and Communication at the Akademie U5 in Munich in 2009, Diana moved to Barcelona where she enjoyed a very artistic and inspiring environment. A few years later she embarked on a 7-year long journey through 55+ countries where she discovered her passion for exotic cultures and travel photography. Having met her husband “on the road” he joined her adventures ever since. After living for a year in Oman they moved to Shanghai in 2018.

Yang Yiliang

Yang Yiliang was born in 1991 in Yuenan, Hunan. He lives in Changsha. As a child, Yiliang developed passion and skill for drawing under the influence of his grandfather. At 20 years old, he reached a clear understanding of his sexual identity, and began to use drawing as a way of self-expression. Constantly exploring new art-making methods, he has combined elements in traditional Chinese paper-cutting with his own drawings into a unique visual style.

Orange Chan

Orange Chan uses bright colors and casual brushwork to combine elements of Fauvism with Pop Art. The bodies of young men, captured mid-action in their daily activities, are highly exaggerated and romanticized. He depicts a strong obsession with the sexual appeal of the body, homoerotic emotions, and idealism.

Ding Tielin

Tielin Ding, born 1996 in Chongqing, is a photography major at Parsons School of Design. He is interested in ambiguity and nuance, and he likes using mapping and walking as ways to reflect on his surroundings. His works have been exhibited in China, the Netherlands, Germany and the US.

Denis Sdobnov

Upon graduating from Tsinghua University, NYSomeTimes was offered a full scholarship to complete a PhD in the Unites States. However, she chose to drop out one day before responding to the offer, and arrived at California Institute of the Arts to begin her journey with art. From using state-of-the-art equipment in pristine laboratories, to graffitiing the worn-out streets of San Francisco, she seeks to use accessible visual language to evoke thoughts about science.

NYSomeTimes

Denis Sdobnov is a Russian artist who currently resides in Shanghai, China. Being brought up in a traditional orthodox family, Denis grew up with tremendous struggles in accepting his core identity, while he found solace in his self-expression through art. Magically, amidst the animated pulses of Shanghai and the culture of ancient and modern China his true-self came alive! His works exude raw emotions, artist’s civic and moral stands with a vivid veil of playful sexuality.

Connor Yang

Connor Yang, a post-1990 artist from Guangdong, is famous for his bold illustrations posted on Instagram. He is born in a conservative Teochew family, where the repression of his homosexuality was grown. With the strong influence of Pop Art, he has started his own identity exploration in art creation. Meanwhile the gay culture, through which he has been experiencing himself, has performed as his inspiration for visual art creation and digital media design.
