4-DEC | RED RIBBON GALA FOR WORLD AIDS DAY 2021

THE SIXTH EDITION OF RED RIBBON GALA RETURNS TO SUPPORT SHANGHAI QINGAI FOR WORLD AIDS DAY 2021

The Red Ribbon Gala, a signature fundraiser for World AIDS Day in Shanghai, is back for the sixth edition this coming December 4 to support the efforts of Shanghai Qingai Health Center. Organized by Q-Events with the support of Andaz Xintiandi, Shanghai, the gala aims to bring individuals and businesses together to raise public awareness, promote education and prevention, and eradicate discrimination and stigmatization of HIV/AIDS.

According to the report published by UNAIDS (the joint United Nations program on HIV/AIDS) in 2020, more than 38 million people were diagnosed with HIV by 2019 with 1.7 million people newly diagnosed in 2019. However, these are only the statistics of diagnoses that were detected.

The latest statistics published by the National Health Commission of the People’s Republic of China stated that in 2020, from January to October, 112,000 HIV positive cases were detected which accumulated to a total of 1.05 million cases nationwide at the end of October 2020.

In Shanghai, the latest Shanghai Center for Disease Control & Prevention Report released on November 20, 2020, stated that from January to November, there were 1,482 HIV positive cases, 559 cases of AIDS, and 258 people have died of AIDS, accumulating to a total of 25,972 cases of people with HIV, 8,917 cases of AIDS, and 2,207 deaths due to AIDS.

The Red Ribbon Gala for World AIDS Day, held annually since 2015 except for 2018, has raised more than CNY 500,000 for Shanghai AIDSLIFE Center and Shanghai Qingai Health Center for the fight to eradicate HIV/AIDS.

Shanghai Qingai Health Center is a social service institution that is committed to the healthy development of young people in Shanghai. The center was founded in 2008 and has since been upholding the core values of “professionalism, friendliness, diversity, and empowerment” in providing services to those affected by STI and HIV, including psychology consultations, advocacy and education, testing, volunteer activities, and academic exchange in Shanghai.

The goals of the center are to get more people tested and learn about their health status and provide effective antiviral treatment for those diagnosed with HIV to accomplish the “Three 90%”.

This year, the center launched 141 care sessions for people living with HIV, 130 psychological consultations, 14 dance therapy sessions for people living with HIV, as well as 7 virtual education workshops through the funds raised at the 2020 Red Ribbon Gala. Additionally, after the Gala in December last year, the volunteers immediately headed to Liangshan, Sichuan Province and donated more than CNY 7,000 worth of clothing for children affected by HIV/AIDS.

With the funds raised at the upcoming Red Ribbon Gala, Shanghai Qingai Health Center plans to initiate the following programs with your support:
1) Advocacy and education through educational articles, videos, paintings, brochures, and other forms of media.
2) Grow the People Living with HIV Support Network and a volunteer service team with the “help people-self-help-help others” as the main concept and carry out relevant work.
3) Create the art salon and group for people living with HIV for the purpose of self-expression and self-healing.
4) Support for children affected by HIV/AIDS in Liangshan, Sichuan Province.

The gala will include a cocktail reception and formal western dinner with presentations, raffles, and auctions. Guests will receive a souvenir set to commemorate the evening.
