Event Recap | Music For One World, Music For One Night

On the 20th April of 2018, the first offline warm-up event of the 10th ShanghaiPRIDE, Music For One Night, organized by ShanghaiPRIDE and MusicLabwas smoothly held. The music enthusiasts from various countries used a variety of musical instruments to arrange a musical performance in accordance to this year’s Pride festival theme as inspiration for musical creativity, having a joyous diverse time.

This music workshop consisted of

three immersive areas:

percussion instruments

keyboard instruments

string instruments.

Participants can choose which musical area they are interested to

participate in and learn from.

The first loud sounds were heard from the percussion instrument area. Between the excited and grand airs of drums and African drums, the agile and lively maracas, the tambourines’ agile vigour, an incredibly rhythmic and lively movement was played in one practice. Subsequently, human voices served as an additional element, the modulation of the voices introduced a brand-new feel to the drumbeat.

The teacher in the stringed instrument section provided a basic fingering chart and patiently explained it to everyone. Some of the beginners felt nervous at first, but soon after they began to wholeheartedly practice with the help and guidance of their enthusiastic peers. Although this was only the first time meeting, the love of music successfully put people at ease and brought everyone closer together.

The enthusiasm of the wind instrument section was also quite strong. The crisp notes from the piano easily blended with the melodious tunes of the harmonica, while the lively rhythm lingered and echoed around the entire site. At one point, there were four hands working together on the piano to create an excellent sound.

After the basic practice, all of the participants sat in a circle together and went through the final rehearsal. Under the guidance of the professional instructors, everyone perfectly integrated ShanghaiPRIDE’s slogan “Our Community | Our Identity | Our Pride” into the music. Through coordinated practice, they created a work of art full of inspiration.

As one of the most inclusive forms of art,

music gives humanity limitless possibilities to express

emotions and feelings.

ShanghaiPRIDE and the MusicLab,

as well as venue supporter UNCaffeBar,

hope to use music’s interesting and varied styles in

order to encourage diversity,

celebrate ShanghaiPride,

and use music to give a voice to the entire LGBTQ

 community.
