06-13 Recap & 06-15~16 Upcoming Events

01 ShanghaiPRIDE Film Festival

The fourth day of ShanghaiPRIDE Film Festival 2018 came to The British Centre on June 13. Films screened included Bo & Mei, a nominee for the ShPFF 2018 Chinese-language Short Film Awards; Against the Law, the opening film of the London LGBT Film Festival 2017; and a set of short films from #FiveFilms4Freedom, a collaboration of the British Council and British Film Institute (BFI). These included Goddess, Goldfish, Handsome & Majestic, Landline and Uninvited.

Consul of the British Consulate General in Shanghai, Marc Connolly, spoke of the intrepid efforts by non-profit groups in the U.K. to advance LGBTQ rights.

Consul of the Cultural and Education Section, Matthew Knowles, introduced the five LGBTQ-themed short films to the audience and shared the main idea of #FiveFilms4Freedom, which emphasizes that love is a human right.

To the audience’s surprise, all six directors appeared in a video message. Karishma Dube, the director of Goddess; Yorgos Angelopoulos, the director of Goldfish; Nathan Drillot and Jeff Petry, the directors of Handsome & Majestic; Matt Houghton, the director of Landline; Seung Yeob Lee, the director of Uninvited; Fergus O’Brien, the director of Against the Law, all shared more about their films and sent their best wishes to ShanghaiPRIDE.

Against the Law, which is based on a true story, is a tale of love in a time when homosexuality was still a crime in Great Britain. The film deeply touched the audience, who cheered and applauded at its conclusion.

We would like to thank the British Consulate in Shanghai and British Council Shanghai for the venue and for co-presenting the films, Gravity Subtitles and QAFONE for subtitles, Auderghem, Beer Belgium, H-Shield, HowFun, Hunter Gatherer, Il Vino, Sweet Teeth, Tenga, WeMan, and White Castle for their generous support with prizes and refreshments.

02 Trivia Night

Trivia Night, once again, challenged participants on subjects ranging from culture, art, entertainment, history, and LGBTQ communities! Every year this event attracts numerous geeks and trivia enthusiasts.

The ebullient crowds kept streaming in, with 130 people forming more than 20 teams. Trivia questions covered history, literature, society and LGBTQ issues. The audience laughed and groaned at the questions, and picked up new factoids about queer history and pop culture.

The enchanting emcee Cocosanti shepherded the room through all the lively activities, and at the end of the evening, one team stood at the top of the heap. The victorious team won a bottle of bubbly sponsored by Lucca, various F&B and lifestyle prizes including a gorgeous package by ESNA BOX.

We want to especially thank TENGA for sponsoring prizes for Trivia Night’s winners, Lucca Cafe & Lounge for sponsoring the venue, and devoted ShanghaiPRIDE supporter Xuhui CDC.
