May 5th – Come rain, come shine, come dancing. CINEMQ was back at Shelter on Thursday night with its 10th edition. The underground venue was packed out despite torrential rain, which left audience wet with anticipation. The night saw the return of CINEMQ co-founder Alvin Li with a program titled MYTH, mixing and meditating on ancient stories of queer identity. Short films, music videos and even cosmetics commercials spun tales of lust, power, betrayal and love.

If you missed it, CINEMQ returns on May 26th, an ongoing queer short film screening + party series. We screen the filthy and gorgeous of queer world cinema once a month. Walls are our screens. Rooftops and basements are our cinemas. Queer is our purpose.

In the larger fight for the elevation of LGTBQ+ peoples, non-LGBTQ+ allies from outside of the community are very important for spreading awareness and supporting their friends within the community. Being an ally is a complex situation, as the role calls on individuals to both give direct support to and provide space for members of the LGBTQ+ community to make achievements for themselves. This Sunday, Queer Talks will examine the roles of allies in increasing the effectiveness of LGBTQ+ movements as we ponder how a balance can be struck between direct action and moral support.MORE…    

Shanghai, May 3rd, 2016 – ShanghaiPRIDE Theatre Festival (ShPTF) will have one of its signature events, dedicated to exploring the reality of the LGBTQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer) Community through artistic expression. The event will assemble Shanghai’s most talented Chinese and English-speaking theatre groups to provide audiences with a rich variety of artistic performances. Starting this May, ShanghaiPRIDE Theatre Festival will be working hand-in-hand with LGBTQ-friendly theatre troupes, both long term partners and new arrivals, to humbly present a rich and abundant performance centering on the theme of “生为平常 I Am Me”.MORE…    

Fabulous colors, people, and fun packed out a party bus on Saturday April 23, as ShanghaiPRIDE hosted our Spring Pubcrawl Fundraiser. Drag Queens, Honey West and Mint, hosted the way between the bars, handing out sassy remarks like flyers on the subway. The party started at Bubbly Nation, and carried on to Roxie, My Place Ruin Bar, Lollipop, Happiness 42, and finished with a night of dancing at Lucca. Special thanks to each bar for the special deals and for helping make this another great event–And of course, thanks to all of you who came out to support our colorful night on the town!

For the 10th edition of CINEMQ, we delve into MYTH; stories of the ancient’s with a queer thread to here and now. Like Ariadne, we seek the beast, twisting lost through the labirynth. We are inflected by the fear of being stripped off a myth, and a lifetime outside of it.

From contemporary reimagination of the classical Greek myth of Endymion, 70s psychedelic erotica, Oscar Wilde’s short stories, to pop music videos that opt for liberating alternatives, CINEMQ is back at Shelter for a night of private myths and public dreams, a collective yearning for our own history and futurity.MORE…

ShanghaiPRIDE would like to announce that registration for the Rainbow Bike Ride is now open!MORE…    

In conjunction with International Day Against Homophobia & Transphobia, this year’s Rainbow Bike Ride will be held on Saturday evening, May 21st, and will also serve to hype the coming ShanghaiPRIDE in June. Six teams of cyclists will represent the six colours of the Rainbow Flag, starting out from every corner of Shanghai to meet at Brownstone, Yongjia Court for an after party. Riding time varies from 30 minutes to 1 hour depending on the route. We will equip each team of cyclists with lights of their representative colour and be there to record the moment all six teams flow together to form the Six-Coloured Rainbow.MORE…

Spring is here and there’s something sweet on the warm breeze which awakens us to thoughts of transformation and lust. CINEMQ blew through last night with their 9th edition. FLORA was a celebration of discovery and becoming, of wandering down to the bottom of the garden, of tasting the strange spring flowers which bloom there. This months short films were programmed by Tingting Shi, a crop of lady fruits and luscious creatures which crossed boundaries of gender, age and self. Juiced-up afterparty tunes were provided by CINEMQ favourite Michael Cignarale (Co:Motion)

ABOUT ALMA

Asia LGBT Milestone Awards & Forum (“ALMA Awards & Forum” in short) is the region’s premier LGBT event aimed at celebrating key occasions, programs, activities, and initiatives deemed to be a key milestone moment. Hiro Mizuhara, founder of ALMA Awards & Forum and Vice President of Singapore’s EPIC Media (ELEMENT Magazine’s holding company), made a recent announcement that an organizing committees board is to be established to put together the 3rd ALMA Awards & Forum, it is a symbol too, that the initiative has become a “milestone” moment itself.MORE…

In the scope of popular culture, LGBTQIA+ individuals are becoming more visible and more accepted by the mainstream. However, within this larger acceptance comes ‘pinkwashing,’ or an appeal to queer-friendliness as a means of pushing commercial or political agendas.

This week, Queer Talks dissects its many implications for queer individuals the world over. How does the exploitation of queer culture by capitalist organizations, politicians, and media harm our community? Are there international consequences of pinkwashing that affect LGBTQIA+ individuals in our increasingly global society? Please feel free to come and take part of our discussion.MORE…

We’re now accepting design submissions for the ShanghaiPRIDE 2016 t-shirt. The winner will have their design printed on the Pride8 official shirt and will receive a VIP card for free access to Pride events.

ShanghaiPRIDE Film Festival returns for its second year, 17-26^th June 2016. The 10 day festival is a unique platform in Shanghai, showcasing new and emerging Chinese filmmaking talent, alongside some of the most talked about and compelling movies from around the world.

In 2016, ShPFF is celebrating GENDER in all its forms, with films on transgender, non-binary and agender people. The festival teaser trailer, released today, features different gender presentations by members of the Shanghai community.MORE…    

Pride’s Got Talent, one of the most gorgeous events in the ShanghaiPRIDE calendar, returned last weekend for its second year. The show brought together 18 queer performance acts from around the city for one night of music, dance, glitter and glamour. It was a full house, with lesbians, gays, boys, girls and all in between packing the rafters of the infamous host venue, The Pearl.

The festivities were kicked off by drag circuit legend Miss Jade, our hostess for the night with a tongue so sharp she could cause permanent damage. Guest performers, including PGT organizer Ennis FW, tore up the night with drag and comedy performances, but the real stars were the 18 competition acts. From original songs to screaming tributes, fire dancers to pole dancers, the audience went crazy for it. Some performers brought their mums, others brought a bus load of fans, and the love ran high all night. Hailing from China and across the world, they represented the cultural diversity of Shanghai’s queer community.MORE…
